Responsible Use and Disposal

BioAfrica products are made from PLA, a plant-based, oil-free material that won’t release toxins or form microplastics as it breaks down.

While PLA should never be recycled and  doesn’t fully degrade in home composting, it can be processed through industrial composting facilities. When composting isn’t available, dispose of items with general waste — they’ll biodegrade slowly but safely.

FAQs

PLA looks and feels like plastic, but it’s made from plants, not petroleum. Because of this, it can’t be processed through traditional recycling systems designed for  fossil-based plastics. Mixing PLA with conventional recycling  contaminates the recycling stream. Instead, PLA should be sent to industrial composting facilities, where high heat and controlled conditions allow it to break down safely.
No. PLA requires industrial composting conditions - sustained heat, moisture, and microbes - to decompose efficiently. Home compost heaps don't reach the temperatures needed. When composting facilities aren't accessible, dispose of PLA products with general waste. They'll biodegrade slowly but won't leach toxins or form microplastics.
In industrial composting conditions, PLA typically breaks down within 90 to 180 days. In landfill or natural environments, where the necessary heat and microbes aren’t present, it decomposes much more slowly — sometimes taking several years. The good news: even when it takes longer, PLA won’t leach toxins or form microplastics, making it a far safer alternative to traditional plastics.
Composting is one of the most effective ways to reduce landfill waste and return  nutrients to the earth. While recycling keeps some materials in  circulation, composting closes the loop — turning organic and biodegradable materials into healthy soil. For products  like PLA, composting prevents long-term pollution and supports a truly  circular system where nothing is wasted.
Industrial composting facilities are becoming more available in South Africa. We recommend YWaste (Western Cape), Clearer Conscience (Gauteng), and The Compost Kitchen (Johannesburg). Some waste management companies also collect  compostable packaging directly. Always confirm that a facility accepts PLA-based bioplastics before dropping off or scheduling collection.
PLA is made from renewable, plant-based materials, meaning it’s oil-free and doesn’t rely on drilling or fossil fuels. It breaks down into carbon dioxide and water under industrial composting conditions and, unlike traditional plastic, won’t leach toxins or create microplastics. PLA offers a responsible transition away from petroleum-based packaging while we work toward broader composting access across Africa.
We recognise that eco-friendly products can feel out of reach for many households. The main reason is scale — producing certified biodegradable materials currently costs more than  mass-producing plastic. As awareness, infrastructure, and demand grow,  these costs will come down. Choosing BioAfrica helps build the foundation for that accessible, greener future.
Our products are available for nationwide delivery through our online store and selected distributors. We’re also expanding to major retail outlets across South Africa — starting with supermarkets and sustainable lifestyle stores.
