Sustainability looks different in Africa. Our waste systems are under pressure, our communities are growing fast, and households want simple, trustworthy solutions they can use every day. Plastic waste remains a major challenge on our continent, especially in South Africa where landfill space is rapidly running out and microplastics are showing up in rivers, beaches and even drinking water.
PLA is not perfect, but it offers a meaningful shift towards a cleaner, more responsible everyday lifestyle. And being honest about what it can and cannot do is part of how BioAfrica shows up with integrity.
First things first: what’s PLA?
PLA is a plant based bioplastic. Instead of coming from fossil fuels, it is made from renewable crops like corn and sugarcane. This already makes a difference. It shifts everyday products away from petroleum and towards materials that can be replenished.
What PLA does well
PLA offers an easy way to reduce your household footprint without changing your routine. It is lightweight, food safe and reliable for real South African living. It works for school lunches, leftovers, pantry storage and pet care.
Because it is bio based, it carries a smaller carbon footprint than traditional plastics. It is also certified biodegradable under specific industrial composting conditions, which means its performance has been tested and verified by global organisations.
PLA and microplastics
Traditional plastics break down into microplastics. These tiny particles contaminate rivers, soil and even drinking water. Recent studies show that more than 80 percent of South African freshwater samples now contain microplastics.
African Centre for Water and Sanitation Research, 2024
PLA does not create microplastics when it breaks down under the right controlled industrial conditions. This is one of its biggest advantages over conventional plastic.

The reality of plastic waste in South Africa
South Africa generates roughly 1.2 million tonnes of plastic waste every year. Only about 28% of that is recycled. The rest is either landfilled or escapes into the environment.
Plastics SA Recycling Survey 2023 – 2024
This imbalance puts pressure on our landfills and increases the risk of pollution on land and in waterways, and this is why small changes in what households choose to use can make a meaningful impact over time.
What PLA cannot do
PLA cannot be recycled with traditional plastics. It looks like plastic and feels like plastic, but South African recycling streams cannot process it. PLA requires specialised industrial composting facilities to break down, which our country does not yet offer at scale. Placing PLA in normal recycling will contaminate the stream.

PLA and the circular economy
South African retailers are increasingly investing in circular economy principles. A circular system aims to reduce waste, extend the life of materials and shift away from the old take, make, dispose model.
PLA supports this shift because
• it comes from renewable sources
• it has a lower carbon footprint
• it can be regenerated in an industrial composting loop rather than staying in landfill for centuries
It is not the final answer, but it is a practical part of a better system.
Why PLA matters for your household
Even with its limitations, PLA remains one of the most responsible alternatives available to South African households today. It reduces reliance on fossil fuels, lowers carbon impact and avoids the microplastic problem created by traditional plastics.
