If you run a coffee business (or a business that sells coffee!), you already have enough to think about. Beans, milk, staff, pricing, suppliers. The last thing you need is confusion about cups - and in fact, this is our Sales team's most frequently asked question!
The type of cup you use does affect your day-to-day service and how your coffee is experienced. Not in a dramatic way, but in small, practical ways that add up.
Here’s a straightforward look at the difference between single, double and ripple wall cups, and when each one makes sense.
Single Wall Cups
Single wall cups are made with one layer of board. They’re lightweight and usually the most cost-effective option.
They’re a good fit if:
• You sell smaller hot or cold drinks
• Customers don’t hold onto their coffee for long
• You’re working with tight margins
The main factor to keep in mind is heat. For hotter drinks, you’ll need a sleeve to make it comfortable to hold. That’s not a problem, but it does add a step (and another cost consideration) during busy periods. If sleeves run out or slow down service, you’ll feel it at the counter.
For many businesses, single wall works perfectly well. It just needs to be supported with the right flow and stock management.
Double Wall Cups
Double wall cups have an extra layer built in. That added insulation means customers can hold their drink comfortably without a separate sleeve.
They feel sturdier, they retain heat better, and from a service point of view, they remove one extra touchpoint during peak rush.
They’re a strong option if:
- Your rush hours are intense
- You want to simplify your counter setup
- Your customers are walking or driving with their coffee
They do cost more than single wall, but they often save time and reduce small service frustrations.
Ripple Wall Cups
Ripple wall cups have a textured outer layer that improves insulation and makes them easier to grip. They’re particularly comfortable with larger, hotter drinks.
They also tend to look and feel more substantial, which suits businesses that position themselves as more premium.
They’re worth considering if:
- You sell a lot of large takeaway coffees
- Your customers hold their drinks for longer
- Presentation and feel are important to your brand
They are typically the highest price point, so it’s about balancing cost with the experience you want to offer.
Which cups are best for your business?
Think about:
- How busy your peak hours are
- Whether sleeves slow down service
- What size drinks you sell most
- How long customers typically hold their coffee
- The price point you’re comfortable charging
Sometimes the more cost-effective option is absolutely right. Other times, spending slightly more per cup makes service smoother and supports your brand positioning.
You know your business better than anyone. The goal is simply to choose a cup that supports how you trade, rather than working against you during busy moments.
If your team can move easily, your counter stays clean and organised, and your customers can hold their coffee comfortably, you’re on the right track.
